Flossing. It is a major component of oral health. However, only slightly more than one-third of Canadians floss daily and brush their teeth at least twice per day, according to Statistics Canada.
These numbers could be a result of some just not wanting to add another item to the ‘to do’ list before they go to bed. Some may think it will be painful. If you don’t floss regularly, it can feel uncomfortable, and your gums will likely bleed. However, with regular flossing, the bleeding and discomfort will soon go away, and once you have established flossing as part of a routine, you won’t give it a second thought! Plus, flossing will help prevent cavities, gum disease and make sure your smile stays happy and healthy!
What Flossing Does that Brushing Cannot
Flossing helps to reach areas between your teeth where a toothbrush cannot. That amounts to approximately one-third of each tooth surface, according to the Canadian Dental Association. A lack of flossing results in plaque accumulation, which can eventually lead to the development of tooth decay and gum disease. Why? Without proper cleaning, the plaque buildup turns into tartar within 24 to 36 hours. Tartar can only be removed through professional cleaning. In addition, plaque and tartar harbour bacteria that produce the acidic byproducts responsible for tooth decay, which requires treatment by the dentist.
Getting into the Habit of Flossing
Flossing isn’t difficult. One of our hygienists at Doncaster Dental Studio in Thornhill will be happy to show you the best way to hold dental floss to achieve the best results. We recommend using waxed floss or dental tape, as they are easier on the gums and less likely to split or fray. Be sure to floss both sides of every tooth, including your back teeth.
A dental floss pick can be useful for a quick cleaning following a meal. However, they are not a substitute for flossing as you cannot reach the surface area surrounding the base of the tooth as well as you can with floss.
It can take a couple of weeks for your gums to get accustomed to flossing. You can expect mild bleeding during this time, but if it stops quickly, there is nothing to be concerned about.
