Dental braces, commonly used in orthodontics, are useful for aligning teeth and improving overall dental health; they gradually adjust the teeth’s alignment to optimize your bite. Additionally, traditional braces can solve many problems associated with misaligned biting profiles, crooked teeth, and other teeth and jaw flaws. Braces can also be an excellent dental health investment for the long term. Since there are fewer gaps for bacteria to build up with better-aligned teeth, cavities are less likely to occur in the future.
On top of the health benefits that come with straightening your teeth, they give your smile a significant cosmetic boost!

PROCESS OF GETTING BRACES
Typically, four elements make up a brace: brackets, bonding material, archwire, and ligature plastic. The archwire continuously puts pressure on the brackets and the teeth, which gradually adjusts the teeth towards the desired placement. During this process, the teeth become loose and force the bone to remodel itself to support the teeth in their new arrangement. This process is called “bone remodelling.”
Typically, braces need between six months to two and a half years to complete tooth alignment. Occasionally, orthodontic spacers must create enough space on the back teeth before braces can be applied.
TYPES OF BRACES
Our specialized orthodontists at Doncaster Dental Studio evaluate every patient personally to provide each individual with the best orthodontic plan. Among the options for the type of braces that you may use, the most common ones are:
These are the most common types of braces and have been around for a long time. They used to be very big and noticeable, but have recently become much more compact and effective.
These types of braces are most commonly used for children and teens. Essentially, metal braces consist of a piece of wire tied to the teeth with elastic bands. They do require a little more maintenance, as patients are required to come in every 4-8 weeks so that one of our Thornhill dentists can adjust the wire. They are also harder to clean during brushing and flossing.
Lingual braces may be used as a more cosmetic alternative to traditional braces and are bonded to the back of the teeth and away from view. They are sought after because they are not visible to others and are more efficient in some patients.
One thing to keep in mind is that lingual braces may cause disruption to normal speech (some patients report developing lisps) and irritation to the tongue. These symptoms usually disappear after a few weeks, however, as patients get used to the braces.
Clear/ceramic braces are the exact same as traditional metal braces, except that they use tooth or enamel coloured for the brackets instead of metallic-coloured brackets. This means that they are more cosmetically appealing.
Self-ligating braces use a sliding mechanism (instead of elastic bands used in traditional braces). Because of the sliding mechanism, the braces move with the natural movement of your teeth so they don’t have to be tightened by your orthodontist. They look very similar to metal braces but work faster because of the lack of need to adjust them every so often.
Clear aligners such as Invisalign are a more cosmetic alternative to traditional braces due to the invisibility of the aligners. They are just as effective as traditional braces but are more convenient because they are easier to remove and clean.
