The Best Solution for Oral and Dental Trauma Prevention
Nightguards are protective devices used to prevent damage to the teeth from grinding at night when a person sleeps. Some people suffer from bruxism, a problem where people unconsciously grind or clench their teeth (during the day and/or night).
If you often find yourself waking up with a sore jaw, headaches, or earaches, then you may suffer from bruxism. In this case, a nightguard could be right for you!

What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is a medical condition that causes people to grind and clench their teeth, often without their awareness. This can affect them during both the day and the night.
When bruxism affects sleep, it can lead to other sleep disorders such as snoring issues and sleep apnea. This can affect the quality of sleep of both the person affected by bruxism and the bed partner.
Although bruxism is not completely understood, there are a variety of factors that are likely to cause it. Grinding teeth during the day may be a coping mechanism to deal with anxiety, anger, stress, and other negative emotions.
-
Risk Factors
- Stress: Some people grind their teeth more when they are stressed, anxious, angry, or frustrated.
- Age: Bruxism is much more common in children and typically goes away by adulthood.
- Personality type: Having an aggressive and hyperactive personality can increase the risk.
- Medications: Some medications and substances such as antidepressants, caffiene, alcohol, and recreational drugs can have side effects that include teeth grinding.
- Family history: Bruxism tends to have a small hereditary component.

How do nightguards work?
Nightguards are an easy and non-invasive solution for bruxism. Nightguards are made from a soft material, and our Thornhill dental team will work with you to create a custom fit for your teeth for ultimate comfort. Once made, you can wear your nightguards over your top and bottom arch, and it will protect you from grinding and damaging your teeth.

Are over-the-counter nightguards any good?
Over-the-counter (OTC) nightguards are tempting to use because they are convenient to get. However, there are a lot of problems that may arise with the long-term use of OTC nightguards:
- They're not as durable or comfortable as custom nightguards
- They are more likely to hinder breathing and speech
- Because it's uncomfortable, you may not want to wear it
Instead, we recommend getting a custom-made nightguard from our Thornhill dental office. We take a mould of your teeth and design a fit custom for you.

Mouthguards and sports guards
Another type of mouthguard is a sports guard, which is used by adults and children during spots and other competitive or physical activities. The chances of injury are high during these types of activities, so it's important to keep your mouth protected and avoid unnecessary dental emergencies.
